What is a snap barrel?

Simply put, it is part of the snap that snaps into the mating component. Essentially, it is the stem-like part of the top of the button, coming out from the back of the top of the button.

The length of the barrel is very important!

Only a barrel of the right length can make our snaps stronger and more beautiful. Choosing a barrel that is too short or too long can cause many problems. If the selected barrel is too short, it will not pass through the fabric layer, but if it is too long, it will have a negative impact on the function of the snap.

Available options

As you may have been thinking about, the most important thing to consider when choosing the length of the barrel is the thickness of the canvas and the number of layers of the canvas we are using. Here, we will consider the thickness of a standard canvas material between 0.019 and 0.024 inches, which is approximately 1/50 inch. The figure below will be based on this thickness.

The most common barrel lengths are 11/64" and 3/16", and other popular options include 1/4" and 5/16". Other lengths are rarely used.

The number of layers of the standard canvas and the appropriate barrel length:

2 – 6 layers –> 11/64" or 3/16"

6 – 9 layers –> 1/4"

9 – 12 layers –> 5/16"

Note: If you are using a much thicker or much thinner canvas, you should know its exact thickness or measure it to determine the length of the barrel to use. Some basic math may be needed.
