How manufacturers check the quality of zippers

The zipper looks like a simple fastener in appearance, in fact it also has a complicated structure. Whether it is Metal Zipper, Nylon Zipper, Plastic Teeth Zipper, or Rhinestone Zipper, Invisible Zipper, Jeans Zipper and any other form of zipper, it is composed of tape, bead, scoops, top stop, bottom stop, slider and other accessories.

The following are several aspects of measuring zipper quality.

1.Strength

The teeth of the zipper and the entire zipper should have a certain load-bearing capacity. Especially for heavy-duty zippers used for clothing and fragile items, make sure that they do not break or fall off easily.

We can use a tensile tester to test the strength of the teeth. A hook is attached to a tooth and the machine applies force to it until it breaks away from the cloth (a gauge then measures and records the breaking point).

The entire zipper also goes through a similar testing procedure. First, a testing machine is attached to the zipper tape on each side. The machine pulls on it until the zipper is completely torn into two pieces.

Heavy duty zippers (those commonly used for bags, luggage, heavy jackets and coats) are required to pass higher strength values than lightweight zippers.

2.Size

A qualified zipper must be able to perform its intended function.Using statistical analysis, all parts of the zipper are meticulously sized and scrutinized to ensure that they fall within an acceptable size range. Should these dimensions be of the incorrect size, the reliability of the zipper and the garment itself is compromised.

3.Flatness and Straightness

To test for flatness, the zipper is passed through a gauge that is set at a specific height. If any part of the zipper touches the gauge, it is deemed defective and will be discarded immediately.

The zipper is also laid and measured against a straight edge to ensure that it doesn`t curve.

4.Ease of Zipping

A dedicated tensile testing machine measures the amount of force necessary to zip a zipper up and down.

Lightweight zippers (the kind used for garments) often have a force value that is lower than zippers used for mattress covers and bags. This is to ensure that a person of average strength can easily zip his or her clothes without tearing the fabric material.
