Spray Painting Methods of zipper

January 13, 2020

In modern zipper painting applications, spray paintings are not only utilized for the body works, but also for the small details. Below, we will learn about some of the common spray painting techniques and their applications in the zipper industry.

Although there are many spray painting methods and technologies available, there are generally three of them commonly used in the zipper industry.
1. Rack Spraying
Rack painting is also one of the most common techniques used in spraying, and as the name suggests, it is done by lining the zipper parts on a rack system.

The zipper parts are then sprayed evenly before they are dried on the rack. Depending on the color and shading requirement, the coating and drying process can be carried out multiple times.
Although generally more complicated, rack spraying method is useful for some color shading, which can’t be achieved through other methods.
2. Barrel Spraying
The barrel spraying technology, sometimes called the hot-barrel painting, was primarily invented by the zipper industry in search for the most efficient painting technique. Today, the method remains one of the most popular because of its practicality and effectiveness.
The process is done by putting the parts of the zippers into the rotating barrel machine. Depending on the coating and substrate type, the parts might be pre-heated before use (hence the name, hot-barrel). The pre-heating temperature depends on the material.

Then, a two-pack paint system is sprayed with the spray guns onto the rolling parts. This way, the continuous process of painting and drying (due to the temperature) are done simultaneously, giving a perfectly even spray to the parts. The method is preferred for its simplicity, eliminating the need for multiple spraying and drying process.

3. Cold Spraying
The automated cold spraying method utilizes a newer technology where the paint is cooled during the process, thus eliminating the drying process altogether. The technology uses a low-pressure air to spray the paint evenly, which due to the temperature, will dry up almost instantaneously.
Although generally the most advanced, the technology require a fairly expensive investment, and can’t achieve some colors and shadings available to other methods.
